This past Saturday (April 25) myFM reporters attended Camp Legewade’s work day to hear what needs to get done ahead of the opening date on June 1 this year.
While that date is creeping up, camp chair Sara Luker, said there is a lot of progress being made thanks to the support of the community.
Luker promoted the work day on social media and called on the community to provide a helping hand in getting the campsite up-to-snuff according to the standards of Scouts Canada.
Volunteers flocked from all walks of life; there were active scout leaders, local labourers and people who simply wanted to help out.
One of those volunteers was Steve Hisko.
Hisko’s niece asked him to help out on the workday and so he grabbed his trimmers and took to the trail.
The trail leading to the camp was dense with brush and the soundscape was industrial; log splitters and skid steers were puttering away while roofers were installing the new tin on the cabins.
There is so much work to do because the campsite hasn’t been used since the days of the covid lockdowns and as a result Scouts Canada wanted to sell the land and shut down the campsite.

Following the news of potential closure, Sara Luker along with other community members, banded together as a camp committee and submit an appeal to keep the camp up-and-running.
After years of disuse safety hazards began to show; fire alarms expired, roofs were leaking and small animals were taking up some vacancies.
Camp warden, Scott Powell, went through the scout ranks as a kid and now with kids of his own, he wants to continue the legacy of the camp.
Powell said these volunteers were a huge help.
Luker said lots of work was completed on April 25, but there is still more to do.
On May 9 Camp Legewade is hosting another work day and is once again asking for the community to show their support.
Here are the details:
- Campsite located at 1017A Fraser Rd. on Hurd’s Lake, not too far South of Renfrew
- Work day is on May 9 starting at 9 a.m.
- Lunch will be provided
- Tasks include: wood cutting, chipping, putting up drywall, cleaning, painting, yard clean up, building tent platforms and other miscellaneous tasks
Despite the grocery list, Luker is confident to open in time for June 1 when the first round of rentals make camp.
