The City of Pembroke has begun preparations for its 200th anniversary in 2028, launching early planning for what officials say will be a year of celebrations and community-focused events.
The bicentennial will mark a major milestone for the eastern Ontario city, building on previous anniversary celebrations held in 1928 and 1978. Organizers say the upcoming anniversary will both reflect on Pembroke’s history and look ahead to its future.
Planning efforts are being led by a newly established 200th Anniversary Advisory Committee, supported by six working groups focused on areas including heritage, events, community engagement, and funding. The groups include volunteers working alongside city staff and council members.
The city says the approach is intended to ensure the anniversary reflects a broad cross-section of the community.
While details are still being developed, officials say residents can expect a range of initiatives leading up to and throughout 2028. Proposed plans include heritage projects such as a commemorative book and storytelling programs, improvements to public spaces, and a full schedule of events.
A Homecoming Week is expected to be a central feature of the celebrations, aimed at bringing together current and former residents for a series of gatherings and performances.
Mayor Ron Gervais said the anniversary will be an opportunity to highlight the city’s past while bringing the community together.
“This is an opportunity to celebrate where we’ve come from and where we’re going,” Gervais said in a statement. “Pembroke has a proud history, and this milestone will give us a chance to bring people together, recognize our shared experiences, and showcase everything that makes this community special.”
The city is encouraging former residents and visitors from across the Ottawa Valley to plan to return for the celebrations.
Officials say more details will be released as planning continues, with updates and opportunities for residents to get involved expected in the coming months.
