Water levels along the Ottawa River in Pembroke have reached minor flood stage, with officials warning levels are expected to continue rising gradually over the coming days due to ongoing snowmelt in the river’s northern basin.
Environment conditions are also contributing to the situation, with rainfall forecast to persist through the week and into the weekend. Total precipitation could reach up to 30 millimetres by Sunday.
Residents in low-lying areas are being urged to take precautions to limit potential damage. Officials say sandbagging remains an effective method when done properly, recommending bags be partially filled to allow for tight stacking in staggered rows to form a barrier.
They also advise placing plastic sheeting beneath and over sandbags to improve water resistance, and building walls wider than they are high while positioning them slightly away from structures to reduce pressure on foundations.
The city is reminding residents to use proper lifting techniques and wear gloves when handling sandbags to avoid injury.
Those in need of sand or bags are asked to contact the City of Pembroke’s operations department and provide their address along with an estimate of the number of bags required.
