The Voice of the Pontiac is being recognized by their peers for keeping local news alive in Quebec.
Shawville-based newspaper The Equity has earned twelve nominations ahead of this year’s Quebec Community Newspaper Awards, as fellow journalists from all parts of the province respect the work being done by the small team covering the 19 municipalities within the MRC Pontiac.
Editor Sophie Kuijper Dickson says it is exciting to see that local news is still alive and well and that people are noticing.
The nominations come as Kujiper Dickson says The Equity continues to pick up momentum since new publisher Jon Stewart of Calumet Media took over in 2025 and are a sign of the quality reporting being done as they navigate internal changes at the press and the evolving news landscape around them.
A major change at the paper is the growth of their digital presence, developing new email blasts and an online app that will help them stay relevant as how people get their news increasing requires journalists to embrace new spaces to share their stories.
The acknowledgment is particularly special for Kujiper Dickson, whose family ran The Equity from the 1950s until last year’s sale, because it shows that the paper remains on track as they adapt to better serve their readers.
The Equity will find out how they fared in this year’s QCNA selections at an awards ceremony in June.
