Many of the Ottawa Valley’s Algonquin, Kashubian, Irish and German descendants have one big thing in common – a love of hockey. That’s the idea behind the Opeongo Heritage Cup, which is now in its 20th year.
Madawaska Valley Township Mayor David Shulist says there are a lot of new players but also many familiar faces, as the tournament has become a family tradition for many.
There are 17 games being played by the four nations represented. Opening ceremonies are on Friday night (March 27) at the Paul J. Yakabuskie Community Centre in Barry’s Bay.
Four dignitaries will represent the four nations competing: MP Cheryl Gallant will wear the German Black Eagles Jersey, MPP Billy Denault will be wearing the Kashubian Griffins Jersey, Renfrew County Warden Jennifer Murphy will don the Irish Shamrock Jersey and Chief Greg Sarazin will wear the Algonquin Thunderbird Jersey. They’ll drop the puck at 6:50pm.
Games continue right through the weekend. Admission is $10 a day or $30 for the weekend.
