Ice storm creates dangerous roads as OPP urges drivers to stay home
A prolonged freezing rain event is making roads treacherous across parts of eastern Ontario, prompting the Ontario Provincial Police to urge motorists to avoid unnecessary travel.
The Upper Ottawa Valley OPP says icy conditions place extra strain on both drivers and vehicles, increasing the risk of collisions. Officers are reminding those who must travel to stay alert, slow down and remain in control at all times.
Police say drivers should adjust speed to match road conditions and leave extra space between vehicles, as stopping distances can increase significantly on ice. Clearing snow and ice from windows, mirrors and lights is also essential to ensure visibility.
Motorists are encouraged to use four winter tires, maintain good wiper blades and keep plenty of windshield washer fluid on hand.
OPP advises allowing extra travel time or postponing trips if conditions worsen. Up-to-date highway information is available by calling 511 or visiting Ontario’s 511 website.
