The Black Bears Charity Hockey Tournament is skating toward a major milestone, with organizers already looking ahead to its 20th anniversary in 2027. This year’s event marked the 19th edition and raised $28,500 for the Pembroke Regional Hospital Foundation.
The tournament was launched nearly two decades ago by security staff from Canadian Nuclear Laboratories, beginning with four teams made up of employees. Since then, it has grown into one of the Upper Ottawa Valley’s largest adult hockey tournaments.
Funds raised this year will help purchase a new ureteroscope for the hospital’s surgical department and two IV pumps for the emergency department at Pembroke Regional Hospital.
Roger Martin, executive director of the PRH Foundation, says the tournament’s long-running support helps fund important medical equipment not fully covered through government funding, benefiting patients across the region.
