Pembroke campus among those hit as Algonquin College cuts 30 programs
Algonquin College’s Pembroke campus is among those affected after the college’s board of governors voted unanimously to cancel 30 programs as it deals with ongoing financial pressure.
The decision was made during a virtual meeting Monday afternoon that was held online only, with members of the public required to register through Eventbrite to watch.
At the Pembroke campus, the programs slated for cancellation are Business, Business Fundamentals, Computer Programming, and Environmental Management and Assessment.
Across the college system, other programs being cut include paralegal studies, law clerk, journalism, several horticulture programs and music industry arts.
College leadership says the move is not a reflection of the work done by students or faculty, but part of broader efforts to address financial challenges facing the institution.
Students currently enrolled in the affected programs will be allowed to complete their studies, but no new students will be admitted.
The announcement comes just months ahead of the planned closure of Algonquin College’s Perth campus.
