The Ontario Provincial Police say a reported shooting in Barry’s Bay this week is now being investigated as a possible swatting incident.
Officers with the Upper Ottawa Valley detachment responded Wednesday, Feb. 25, to a report of threats indicating someone had been shot in the community. Police say multiple resources were deployed, including members of the force’s Emergency Response Team.
After what police describe as a thorough search of the area, officers determined everyone was safe and there was no threat to the public.
Swatting involves making a false or misleading emergency report to prompt a large-scale police response to a specific location.
Police say they respond to calls based on the information available at the time and may deploy significant resources to ensure public safety until a situation is confirmed to be secure.
The OPP say false emergency calls divert officers, firefighters and paramedics away from legitimate emergencies where timely response can be critical.
Making a false report to emergency services is a criminal offence under the Criminal Code, police said, adding those responsible for swatting incidents can face serious charges.
The investigation is continuing.
