Members of the Ottawa detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police have laid impaired driving charges against an Ottawa teen following a collision with a marked police cruiser early Sunday morning.
Police say officers were responding to a separate collision shortly before 2:30 a.m. on Feb. 1 on Highway 417 westbound near Metcalfe Street. An officer observed a vehicle approaching the scene at a high rate of speed and took evasive action.
The officer and another individual involved in the initial collision entered the cruiser moments before it was struck from behind. No injuries were reported.
Investigators say the driver of the vehicle that hit the cruiser was suspected of being impaired by alcohol.
As a result, Tyler Wilson, 18, of Ottawa has been charged with operation while impaired by alcohol and drugs, dangerous operation, young person — blood alcohol concentration above zero, failure to move over for an emergency vehicle when safe to do so, and having care or control of a motor vehicle with an unsealed container of liquor.
Police say Wilson’s driver’s licence was suspended for 90 days and the vehicle was impounded for 14 days.
The accused is scheduled to appear in Ontario Court of Justice in Ottawa at a later date.
