Environment Canada has issued a snowfall warning for the region, with snow expected to continue through Thursday evening. Forecasters say total accumulations of 10 to 15 centimetres are possible, with slippery road conditions and reduced visibility in areas affected by heavy and blowing snow.
In response, the City of Pembroke has declared a significant weather event under Regulation 239/02 of the Municipal Act, 2001, citing the forecasted snowfall, the prolonged nature of the storm, and strong wind gusts expected to impact travel conditions across the city.
City officials stress the declaration does not indicate a reduced level of service or road closures. Rather, it serves as a notice to residents that hazardous conditions may exist and that additional time may be required to restore roads and sidewalks to normal winter standards.
The City of Pembroke Operations Department is reminding residents that winter parking restrictions remain in effect. Vehicles should be parked in driveways during the storm and after snowfall ends to allow for snow removal. Cars left on city streets may be ticketed or towed at the owner’s expense.
Residents are also asked to place garbage and recycling bins five to six feet back from roadways to avoid interference with plowing operations. Officials note snowplows cannot maneuver around containers left near the street.
With significant snowfall and drifting expected, the city is urging patience and encouraging residents to stay off the roads during and immediately after the storm to allow crews to clear streets and sidewalks safely and efficiently.
