A 19-year-old from Pembroke is facing multiple charges after allegedly speeding away from police and later being arrested in connection with an intimate partner violence incident, Ontario Provincial Police say.
Police said officers with the Upper Ottawa Valley detachment spotted a vehicle travelling 135 kilometres per hour in an 80 kilometres per hour zone on Lake Dore Road in North Algona-Wilberforce Township on the evening of January 6th.
The vehicle continued onto Kokomis Road on the Algonquins of Pikwakanagan First Nation, where officers attempted a traffic stop, police said. The driver allegedly fled at a high rate of speed, but officers did not pursue for safety reasons.
Police were able to identify the vehicle through its licence plate, which was captured by an automated licence plate recognition system in a cruiser’s in-car camera, they said.
As officers worked to locate the driver, police said they became aware of an intimate partner violence incident allegedly involving the same individual. Later that evening, officers found the vehicle at a residence in Petawawa and arrested the driver.
The accused has been charged with spousal assault, performing a stunt with a motor vehicle, failing to stop for police, driving without a licence and speeding more than 50 kilometres per hour over the posted limit.
Police said the accused was released and is scheduled to appear in Ontario Court of Justice in Pembroke at a later date. The person’s name is not being released in order to protect the identity of the alleged victim.
Police encouraged anyone experiencing domestic violence to seek help through local support services or by calling 911 in an emergency.
