Hockey first hit the airwaves on February 8, 1923, when Norman Albert broadcast the third period of an OHA game on Toronto’s CFCA radio station. The NHL followed just days later with its first radio broadcast on February 14.
Geoff Patterson is keeping that tradition alive today by calling all of the away games for the Pembroke Lumber Kings. Having been with the Lumber Kings organization for as long as he has, Geoff has a great deal of insight into the team.
myFM sat down with Geoff recently for this conversation:
The Lumber Kings are a young team this year, with only a handful of 19-year-old “veterans” on the ice, so there is a lot of learning happening out there, says Geoff.
Despite the ages of the players—which in itself doesn’t account for wins or losses—Patterson says getting back to basics in some respects will serve the team well as the season progresses.
One of the bigger pieces of news to come out of the PLK camp this year was the exit of Alex Fortier, and Geoff knows this was an adjustment the team needed to make early on.
Being a Lumber Kings fan these days is a challenge at best, from a team that, as far back as anyone can remember, had a very staunch following through every season.
With still a lot of hockey left to play for the remainder of the season, all one can really say is: Go Kings Go!
