The annual Tree of Lights Campaign is underway in support of St. Francis Memorial Hospital, with proceeds this year directed toward local healthcare needs. Funds will help purchase essential items, including patient beds and lifts, a VAC wound healing machine, and a medication dispensing unit.
The campaign is a mail appeal, with more than 3,100 letters sent to donors in and beyond the community. Participants purchase bulbs to light the Tree in Memory, Honour, or Appreciation of someone special. Names are written on bulb cards displayed at the hospital, and recipients can receive a certificate recognizing the gift. Bulbs are often purchased to honor neighbours, teachers, or community service providers.
A highlight of the campaign is the Tree Lighting Ceremony, a growing Christmas tradition. This year’s event took place Friday, Dec. 5 at 6:30 p.m. at the Barry’s Bay Railway Station. The large temporary tree was donated by Dr. Joe Cybulski and decorated by the Township of Madawaska Valley, alongside a smaller permanent tree planted by the township.
Visitors enjoyed free coffee and hot chocolate from Madawaska Coffee, a mini petting zoo hosted by Simmons Sport Horses, and live music from the Station Keeper’s Singers. Sound was provided by Stan and Sherry Quesnelle.
The campaign is ongoing until the end of December.
