On November 13, 2025, officers from the Upper Ottawa Valley Detachment of the OPP carried out a Commercial Motor Vehicle safety initiative at checkpoints in the City of Pembroke and Laurentian Valley Township, including along Highway 17. The operation focused on identifying mechanical safety issues in commercial vehicles.
UOV OPP officers inspected eight CMVs, placing two out of service due to mechanical defects. Four charges were issued under the Highway Traffic Act for offences such as failing to complete required annual inspections and failing to possess a valid Commercial Vehicle Operator’s Registration. Officers also issued several warnings and engaged operators in safety-related education.
“The UOV OPP 2026–2029 Action Plan prioritizes CMV enforcement as well as targeting the ‘Big 4,’ which in terms of personal injury causation are impaired driving, distracted driving, aggressive driving (speeding) and lack of occupant restraint,” said Inspector Stephan Neufeld of the UOV OPP.
