Paul Hammond is a long distance runner who has a dream to run 50 kilometres in every country in the world before the end of his 50th decade and Paul has chosen Petawawa as his Canadian leg of the feat. His run through Petawawa took him 7 hours and 15 minutes total.
Paul hails from Exeter England where he enjoyed marathon running and had the idea to expand his horizons somewhat:
Canada represents country number 17 for Paul so he is well on his way to his ultimate goal, but why Petawawa you might ask? It’s all thanks to the famous motivational speaker and guru Tony Robbins of all people. Petawawa resident Nathalie Lessard explains how Paul ended up here:
Paul and Nathalie hit it off as part of the “Fireteam” who were also referred to as the “Outside Dogs” by the decidedly cozier indoor volunteers at the Tony Robbins events. What drew them both to the event is a story in and of itself as both have experienced trauma and loss in their lives and were searching for meaning and inspiration. Nathalie suffered from severe depression although she was very good at hiding it from the world:
Paul talks about the practice of being “present” in ones life and paying attention to one’s surroundings and remaining engaged by life. This is the metaphor that the walk across hot coals attempts to demonstrate.
Paul came to search for more meaning in life after the loss of his younger brother thirteen years ago and through the experience of working on the Fireteam he and Nathalie are likely to be lifelong friends and share their experiences with others at every opportunity. Paul puts it all in succinct perspective:
Paul hasn’t yet decided where his next run will take place but he is inviting anyone from anywhere to give him some ideas. If you would like to follow Paul’s journey and donate to help him achieve his goals click on the link below.
