Last month we introduced you to an inspirational young local lady who is a 14 year old Fellowes High School student here in Pembroke and she just happens to to have been born missing the lower portion of her left arm. Megan Mantha is her name and she was on her way last month to Ottawa to participate in seminars celebrating the 50th anniversary of the War Amps Child Amputee (CHAMPS) Program.
Megan and her mom Sally were gracious enough to come back to tell us about the highlights of the weekend event where Megan attended for the first time as a Junior Counsellor. Megan shared her thoughts on the first time being on the other end of the interaction:
For Megan it was a learning experience that she has been gearing up for many years as she has been a CHAMP pretty much since her infancy:
Megan’s Mom Sally joined her daughter for our chat and she couldn’t be more proud of how Megan handled her graduation from pupil to instructor. It seems like yesterday when the roles were reversed:
For Sally another highlight of the weekend was the opportunity to meet with other parents of amputees one on one and share stories of triumph and tribulation in a forum where everyone there had at least some common ground:
Coming up next month will be the War Amps “Reconnect Event” which will be a one day event held in Kingston where young amputees and their parents can continue to build and strengthen relationships with one another as they continue to navigate through the very special world that the CHAMPS program has provided.
