The Bromley Historical Society is celebrating the Scottish roots of early Renfrew County settlers with a free public look at the history of the Renfrew Highland Pipes and Drums, one of Canada’s oldest pipe bands. The presentation takes place Sunday, Oct. 19 at 2 p.m. at the Old Town Hall, 498 Micksburg Road, Osceola.
Founded in 1911 by tailor George Carruth, the band began with bagpipe lessons behind his Renfrew shop. Early students eventually formed a pipe band, giving their first performance at a Pembroke curling match.
Band members, proud of their heritage and community spirit, continue to teach young musicians, preserving the tradition. Pipe Master Melissa Frick of Renfrew, Drum Sgt. Rob McKenzie of Cobden, and Clark Smith of Douglas, the band’s oldest member, will lead the presentation.
Refreshments will follow, along with a set of bagpipe marches.
