On Saturday, Sept. 13, the Upper Pontiac Sports Complex will be a place of music, memories, and togetherness, as the community pays tribute to a remarkable young girl whose kindness continues to inspire.
Held in memory of eight-year-old Kendyl Smith-Trimm, the second Caring for Kids CHEO Fundraiser continues her legacy of compassion. Kendyl passed away in August 2023 after an 18-month fight with osteosarcoma, the same bone cancer that took Terry Fox. Despite her struggle, she was known for always putting others first.
Mother of Kendyl, Cheryl Smith spoke to myFM recently about how the memory of her daughter continues to resonate with so many people in The Valley and she looked back at last years event as she gears up for the second fundraiser:
Smith is always amazed at the kindness and support of the community when it comes to all things near and dear to the hearts of Valley residents and she is grateful that so many continue to support Kendyl’s legacy:
Highlights of this year’s event include guest speaker Jolan Wong, a childhood cancer survivor and Paralympian, plus a magic show by Steven Anthony, live music from Rewd and Midlife Krisis, a late lunch, and plenty of chances to win through a 50/50 draw, raffles and door prizes.
It’s been a long and arduous road for Cheryl and her family and friends when in 2023 Kendyl was first diagnosed with the cancer that eventually claimed her life and she had nothing but praise for the staff at CHEO who helped to make their difficult journey a lot more bearable:
The fundraiser takes place from 8 p.m. to 1 a.m. at the Upper Pontiac Sports Complex, 52 Chemin Pembroke in Chapeau, Que. Tickets are $25 and can be reserved by calling or texting Sandra at 613-633-7634 or Cheryl at 613-602-2140. Donations are also accepted online through the CHEO Foundation to the Kendyl Smith-Trimm Caring for Kids Endowment Fund.
