A heat wave will keep pelting the Ottawa Valley with hot and humid conditions for the start of the week.
Environment Canada is predicting daytime highs between 31 and 34 degrees Celsius and humidex values reaching 40 on Monday, with overnight lows near 20 degrees providing little relief.
The weather agency notes that extreme heat can affect everyone’s health and cause air quality to drop, creating adverse conditions for those at greater risk of heat illness. Plan outdoor activities for the coolest parts of the day, drink plenty of water even before you feel thirsty, and wear lightweight, loose-fitting clothing.
If your living space is too hot, check with your municipality for cooling stations such as community centres, public libraries, or a shaded park.
Check for signs of heat exhaustion in yourself and others, such as headache, nausea, dizziness, thirst, dark urine, and intense fatigue. If you or someone else notices these symptoms, stop what you’re doing and drink water.
Lastly, drivers are urged to never leave a person or pet inside a parked vehicle, as the temperature inside can quickly reach dangerous or even fatal levels during extreme heat events.
