Students from across Renfrew County had the chance to explore a variety of hands-on career opportunities at the annual Options Skilled Trades Career Fair and Competition, held on May 28 at the Pembroke Memorial Centre. The event was hosted in partnership with all four Renfrew County school boards, Algonquin College, the School College Work Initiative (SCWI), and the Ministry of Labour, Immigration, Training and Skills Development (MLITSD).
The Options event created an exciting, interactive learning environment where students engaged with professionals from fields such as hairstyling, welding, culinary, carpentry, horticulture, electrical, crane boom operation, heavy equipment operation, and automotive technology. Industry partners like Home Depot and DeWalt provided displays and demonstrations, giving students a real-world feel for the tools and skills used in high-demand professions.
Science and technology were also highlighted, with organizations like Canadian Nuclear Laboratories sharing insight into careers in research, engineering, and innovation. Representatives from the Canadian Armed Forces were on site to talk with students about the wide range of career paths available in both the Regular Force and Reserves, including paid education and training.
Students had the chance to participate in a variety of skilled trades competitions such as braiding, hairstyling, makeup, culinary teamwork, cupcake decorating, small engine repair, pit stop challenge, desktop publishing, digital photography, cabinet making, and carpentry. These friendly competitions allowed students to apply their talents in a fun, competitive way.
The event’s main goal was to help students make informed decisions about their future education and career plans by connecting them directly with industry experts and demonstrating the practical value of skilled trades and community-based careers. According to Heidi Fraser, Superintendent of Educational Services with the Renfrew County Catholic District School Board, the event was a great success. She said, “It was fantastic to see so many students engaged and excited about the incredible career opportunities available. The positive feedback from students, educators, and exhibitors alike has been overwhelming.”
The success of the Options Skilled Trades Career Fair and Competition was made possible by the dedicated efforts of organizers and volunteers who worked hard to provide this opportunity for local youth. Organizers and school boards are already looking forward to next year’s event, continuing their mission to inspire and prepare the next generation of skilled professionals.
