Rick Power from the Pembroke Royal Canadian Legion dropped by the myFM studios to give us an update on a project that was first initiated in April of this year.
Following a presentation in April by the RCL, a motion was introduced at Pembroke City Council to fund 50% of the cost of a commemorative crosswalk spearheaded by the RCL that is to be installed at the corner of Pembroke St West and Mackay Steet adjacent to the Cenotaph. The total cost of the project was estimated at $10,000.
Following that, one lone member of Council voted not to move forward with the funding prompting the RCL to re think the project and go it alone.
The idea for the crosswalk, says Rick was based on a design elsewhere in the region that he thought fit the bill:
The Legion currently has approximately $5,400 of the needed $10,000 so financial assistance for this project is more than welcomed. The deadline for donations is September 1st, 2025 and anyone who is interested in donating can reach out to the Legion or Rick Power directly at 613-639-0366.
The final design of the crosswalk is still under discussion, but the current proposal complies with all required municipal codes. The Legion hopes installation will be completed ahead of Remembrance Day in November.
