Canada Road Safety Week runs through until the 19th and it’s an effort which aims to make Canada’s roads the safest in the world. To this end, the campaign is focused on behaviours that put drivers, passengers, pedestrians and other vulnerable road users most at risk.
OPP Community Engagement Officer Shawn Peever puts it in fairly simple terms as the Victoria Day long weekend kicks off:
Police have been issuing special reminders about traffic safety for as long as there have been cars on the road and especially ahead of periods where vehicular traffic increases such as long weekends.
Peever’s attentions have not only been on the roads this week but in a much broader sense as we are coming to the end of Police Week which kicked off Monday and ends tomorrow.
National Police Week was launched in 1970 to help foster stronger relationships between police and the communities they serve, while raising awareness about the wide range of services offered by law enforcement.
The campaign is coordinated by the National Strategic Communications Working Group, made up of communications professionals from police services across Canada.
Constable Peever says it s a great opportunity to remind the public that the OPP is there when needed and to encourage additional community engagement :
Peever has been busy this week with his appearances at a handful of schools in the area where he has been instructing kids on drug awareness, bullying and social media issues and he says that kids have been very receptive to these types of messages. He’s also been busy getting the word out to older folks in the area warning of various scams that have been making their way around the community:
Its a a very busy time for the OPP as Boating Safety Week kicks off this weekend as well. Constable Peever will fill us in on what we need to know on that front next week. Have a safe Victoria Day weekend from The OPP and all of us at myFM!
