The City of Pembroke has officially launched its full spring street and sidewalk sweeping program this week, following the start of preliminary cleaning efforts on April 28.
The sweeping operations are running Monday to Friday with extended 16-hour shifts, depending on weather conditions. The City has started cleaning from the center and will move outward toward the east and west boundaries. Priority streets and main roads are cleaned first, followed by residential areas.
As part of the spring clean-up, residents are encouraged to assist by:
-
Sweeping the sidewalk and boulevard in front of their homes.
-
Sweeping the ends of driveways and pushing sand to the edge of the road or into the concrete gutter.
-
Raking grass boulevards and placing grass clippings in green bins.
-
Leaving sand piles at the edge of the road for collection by City staff.
The City reminds residents that while staff will collect sand piles, they will not pick up loose grass clippings left in piles. Placing clippings in green bins helps keep the streets clean and protects stormwater systems from sand pollution, which can harm local rivers and waterways.
Drivers are asked to be cautious and patient when sharing the road with street sweepers. These vehicles move slowly and may stop frequently. Keeping a safe distance and only passing when it’s safe ensures the safety of everyone on the road.
The City acknowledges that sweeping equipment may cause some noise and apologizes for any inconvenience.
