The Pembroke Public Library has recently been honored with the Angus Mowat Award of Excellence, presented by the Ontario Ministry of Tourism, Culture, and Gaming. This prestigious award recognizes the library’s dedication to promoting literacy and cultural diversity through its “Around the World in 90 Days Reading Challenge,” which was held last spring in anticipation of the 2024 Pembroke Multicultural Festival.
The Reading Challenge was a collaborative effort designed to encourage participants to explore books from different countries and learn about diverse cultures. Janelle Martin, a member of the library’s programming and outreach team, spearheaded the initiative. She invited libraries from across Lanark and Renfrew counties to take part in the challenge, allowing local communities to engage in multicultural learning. Participating libraries included Deep River Public Library, Lanark Highlands Public Library, Perth Union Library, Smiths Falls Public Library, Whitewater Region Public Library, and Killaloe District Public Library, among others.
Martin provided each participating library with resources to help tailor the program to suit their specific communities. This collaboration brought libraries together in a shared mission to inspire curiosity and promote inclusivity through educational activities that were fun and accessible for all ages.
The Deep River Public Library praised the positive feedback they received from their community, noting that their patrons appreciated the library’s efforts to host multicultural events and programs. They found that these activities sparked a sense of pride in their community, highlighting their commitment to inclusivity and lifelong learning.
The Lanark Highlands Public Library also expressed their satisfaction with the challenge. Their staff members noted that the flexible design of the reading challenge allowed it to accommodate readers of various ages and abilities, making it a great family activity. They were especially pleased to see participants of all ages submitting completed game boards, demonstrating the program’s widespread appeal.
The Angus Mowat Award of Excellence honors the Pembroke Public Library for its outstanding contributions to library services and its vital role in strengthening cultural literacy within the community. This achievement underscores the library’s commitment to fostering an environment where learning, diversity, and inclusion are prioritized.
Pembroke Deputy Mayor and Library Board Chair Brian Abdallah shared his pride in the library’s recognition. “This award reflects the hard work and dedication of our library staff, volunteers, and the entire community. It’s a testament to how our library continues to be a welcoming place that encourages learning, supports cultural diversity, and brings people together.”
This award marks another milestone in the Pembroke Public Library’s ongoing efforts to create an inclusive, dynamic space for learning and cultural exploration, making it a true cornerstone of the community.
