The Upper Ottawa Valley (UOV) Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) is reminding local residents about the importance of the CAMSafe program, a community CCTV and security video registry launched in May 2022. With video surveillance playing a vital role in solving crimes, the program allows residents and businesses in Pembroke and Petawawa to register their security cameras to assist police investigations.
Originally launched by the Belleville Police Service in June 2021, CAMSafe has expanded to several communities across Ontario, including Pembroke and Petawawa. The program provides a directory of registered cameras that officers can use to request video footage when investigating crimes in the area. To participate, residents only need to provide basic information, such as their name, address, and contact details. The registration is voluntary, and participants can add or remove their information at any time. Police are the only ones with access to the registered details.
CAMSafe is designed to help officers quickly identify potential video footage that may be crucial to an investigation. For example, if a crime occurs in a neighborhood, officers can log into the CAMSafe system, identify registered cameras in the area, and contact owners to request footage. It’s important to note that officers do not have direct access to any cameras or personal information through the system.
The UOV OPP encourages residents and business owners in Pembroke and Petawawa to register their cameras on CAMSafe.ca. By participating in this community-driven program, we can work together to reduce crime and keep our neighborhoods safe.
