Petawawa is updating its Recreation Master Plan for the first time in 14 years. In 2024, the town decided to build on the existing plan from 2012 by working with Thinc Design, a firm hired to create a new 10-year plan for parks and recreation. The firm presented the updated plan to the town council on January 27, seeking feedback on the proposals.
To gather information for the plan, Thinc Design engaged with town staff, council members, and local user groups. They also conducted surveys, including an open online survey and a random telephone survey, to ensure the plan reflects the community’s needs and current strategies.
The new master plan includes immediate, short-term, and long-term recommendations, focusing on expanding recreation programs, enhancing facilities, and fostering community development. Some of the immediate ideas involve adding more programs for all age groups, particularly indoor activities during the winter, and creating outdoor water spaces for the summer months.
A major short-term recommendation is the development of a multi-use recreation complex. This complex could include a second ice pad, a pool, a gymnasium, walking track, and spaces for various age groups to enjoy. The plan also suggests adding more pickleball courts and a new dog park as longer-term goals.
While the plan is ambitious, it is designed to be flexible, allowing it to adapt to the community’s needs over time. Mayor Gary Serviss expressed his gratitude for Thinc Design’s hard work, calling the plan a valuable framework for the town’s future.
“We have to be mindful of our budget, but this plan gives us direction,” Mayor Serviss said. “It’s a positive step forward, whether it happens in the short-term or long-term.”
With input from the community, the town council will prioritize the recommendations. Mayor Serviss acknowledged that with so many passionate user groups, it’s essential to consider all feedback before deciding on which initiatives to pursue first.
“We will listen to everyone and work together to decide what’s best for our community,” he stated.
