Carbon Monoxide is nicknamed, “The Silent Killer”, and is a leading cause of accidental poisoning in Ontario.
Almost 65 percent of all CO incidents happen at home, and that’s why the Technical Standards and Safety Authority (TSSA) has teamed up with the Pembroke Fire Department (and other departments across Renfrew County) to increase local CO awareness.
This critical safety campaign, coincides with Carbon Monoxide Awareness Week runs from November 1-14th.
CO is an invisible, odourless and highly poisonous gas created during the combustion of carbon fuels.
On average, Ontario homes have roughly 4-6 fuel-burning appliances that produce it.
While these appliances may be safely designed, they must be properly maintained.
A TSSA-registered fuels contractor can check on these, and you can do your part by installing working CO alarms in your dwelling.
The imperative is a legal requirement if you have a fuel burning appliance, a fireplace or an attached garage.
