Pembroke city council are continuing the talks of brining public transit back to the city. But at what cost? That is the biggest issue to date. A recent survey of 871 area residents showed that 61 percent would use transit. Another 72 percent said they would support an average property tax increase of $25. However, the city’s treasurer provided a transit forecast cost. If the city used two buses, it would cost almost $1.2 million a year. On the low end, that cost the average homeowner an extra $112 per year on top of their property tax bill. Deputy Mayor for the City, Brian Abdallah has advocated for transit and says it’s time to move forward.
Councilor Andrew Plummer says he can’t see many that would support that.
On the other hand, Councilor Ian Kuehl says if the city is going to do it, do it right.
City council has decided to conduct another survey with stake holders and city staff will come back with an updated report, likely sometime in December.
