Pembroke has set up its heartwarming tradition, the Veterans Banners Program prior to the Thanksgiving Long-Weekend. This program pays tribute to local heroes who have served in various conflicts, ranging from World War I to more recent deployments like Afghanistan.
Bethea Summers, Executive Director of the PBIA, revealed that the program has been in place since 2020 and just concluded its fourth year with 64 banners displayed in the downtown core.
These banners are displayed in the town before Thanksgiving and remain until after Remembrance Day, allowing the community a month to appreciate and honor these local heroes.
One unique aspect of this program is the strong support it receives from local businesses. Many downtown businesses in Pembroke have military connections, either through their owners or employees. These businesses wholeheartedly support the initiative, ensuring that the banners are made and installed annually.
Bethea emphasizes the importance of shopping locally and how the small businesses’ contributions make this program possible. These local businesses have played a crucial role in fostering a sense of unity within the community.
