The Bromley Historical Society welcomes you to a discussion on a piece of Canadian History.
Blaine Marchand with the Society tells myFM that University of Toronto Professor David A. Wilson will join them this Thursday to discuss the Fenians, a group of Irish revolutionaries looking to invade Canada during the time of Confederation, and the creation of the Canadian Spy Service.
Marchand says it’s an appropriate topic considering the current affairs of present day.
He explains that the threat of the Fenians, who conducted a number of armed raids in Canada from between 1866 and 1871, was big enough to reactivate Canada’s first secret police service after it was dissolved following the end of the American Civil War.
Without that threat, we might not have seen the creation of an iconic modern day Canadian police force.
The presentation is free to attend starting at 7:00pm on Thursday, May 18th in the basement of St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church in Cobden.
