It’s a powerful collaboration- a trio of artistic talents combined pays tribute to the three murdered sisters: Carole Culleton, Anastasia Kuzyk and Nathalie Warmerdam.
The Renfrew County women lost their lives to the same serial killer in September of 2015.
Opera singer Joshua Hopkins is younger sibling to Nathalie in the blended family of their youth, and he often reflects on that September 22nd date.
With the idea of moving forward Hopkins, musical colleague Jake Heggie and Canadian poetess and author Margaret Atwood have combined on a song cycle, Songs for Murdered Sisters that Warmerdam’s brother says really touched him.
A chamber version of the performance debuted in Houston Texas in March of last year, and songs for Murdered Sisters is both a film- and a Juno-nominated digital album.
Atwood wrote one of the eight songs to summarize the rage Hopkins experiences to this day.
Canadian audiences have the chance to experience the orchestral performance of the song cycle, in Ottawa, Toronto and Kingston.
The performance in the Nation’s Capital is Thursday (tonight) at 8PM at Southam Hall; Saturday the venue is Toronto’s Roy Thompson Hall, and on Valentine’s Day the National Arts Centre Orchestra performs “Songs” at the Isabel Bader Centre in Kingston at 7:30PM.
