The Grind Pembroke is responding to the concerns of neighbours.
Earlier this week, local residents presented to Pembroke City Council to raise concerns about noise at all hours of the day and night and claims of pet abductions from clients of the Grind.
The Grind is located at 273 Victoria Street in the old fire hall in Pembroke and works with people who are homeless or in need.
Executive Director of the Grind Pembroke, Jerry Novack says there have been no complaints received about allegations of pet abductions.
Dave Henderson, a committee member for the Grind Pembroke, says says asides from parking issues, there have been no direct complaints at all from neighbours or police.
Henderson says the Grind is very aware of the concerns that have been raised. Lighting will be changed in the area and staff have told neighbours how to deal with any issues that come up.
Henderson says while it’s not the ideal solution, the out of the cold warming station operated by the Grind in Pembroke helps keep homeless people in our community from freezing to death.
The neighbours who raised the concerns about the Grind say they are not against what the organization offers, but want it to be operated better.
The Grind says they have strict rules of conduct for their users which are posted, closely monitored and vigorously enforced within the facility. The Grind also notes they can’t be responsible for the actions of users once they leave the premise, but is more than willing to deal with incidents or issues directly related to the organization.
The Grind has been operating in their current location since 2021 and serves as a hub to provide direct help to some of the most vulnerable and marginalized members of the community.
