The Town of Petawawa has announced H&H Construction will be the title sponsor for the 25th anniversary celebrations this year. In 1997, the Township and the Village of Petawawa came together to create what we now know as the Town of Petawawa. When the Town of Petawawa was officially formed, Mayor Bob Sweet says there was only one traffic light at the intersection where McDonald’s currently is. Sweet says in the last 25-years there’s been roughly 1,400 new homes built, a new shopping centre, two schools, a cenotaph, a health centre that recently expanded and the population has grown from 14,000 to over 18,000.
Sweet has been the Mayor for the Town of Petawawa for 22 of 25-years. He tells myFM he’s looking forward to celebrating all the accomplishments and people who have helped build Petawawa to what it is today. Sweet mentioned names like Ed Chow, Dennis Carmody and Ken Pleadwell.
A time capsule will also be dug up at the event and another buried for a future anniversary celebration. In 1997, Sweet says he played in a baseball game between the Township and Village of Petawawa and was part of burying the time capsule, but adds he can’t remember exactly what’s been placed inside.
The Town of Petawawa 25th anniversary celebrations will take place from June 30th to July 3rd, 2022. The event is a combination of Civic Centre Days and Canada Day into one large four day festival with something for everyone to enjoy. Plans are in the works to ensure numerous free events for all ages with numerous musical performances, children’s activities, entertainers and concerts.
More information on the event is available on the Town of Petawawa’s website.
