The Town of Petawawa has received an update on the upcoming municipal election regarding restricted acts after nomination day, also known as the “Lame Duck” period.
With the municipal election set for October 24th, 2022, council will be considered in a “lame duck” period for roughly two months, from nomination day (August 19), to the end of the current term of council (November 14th).
Petawawa councillors supported delegating authority to the Chief Administrative Officer (CAO) from August 19th to November 15th.
Council supported a similar move leading up to the 2018 municipal election.
The Ministry of Municipal Affairs has cautioned municipalities to make provisions to accommodate circumstances that may arise during the “lame duck” period by delegating staff the authority to make decisions.
Examples presented to council where the CAO may exercise the delegation of authority included infrastructure projects with contract changes or hiring staff for winter operations.
A by-law be brought forward at the next council meeting to formally approve the delegation of authority.
