The countdown is on for the Ontario Winter Games that are coming to Renfrew County. We are officially 100-days out from the event. The 2022 Ontario Winter Games are set for the last weekend in February (25th – 27th) and the first weekend in March (3rd – 6th).
Minister of Heritage, Sport, Tourism and Culture, Lisa MacLeod, was in attendance at a launch event Tuesday afternoon (Nov. 16th, 2021) at the Best Western in Pembroke.
MacLeod announced an additional $400,000 contribution from the Ontario government, bringing the total provincial investment for the 2022 Winter Games up to $1.4-million.
MacLeod says the County of Renfrew deserves the extra $400,000 with all the hard work and planning that has gone into this event.
MacLeod says it’s nice to see large scale sporting events returning to Ontario. She adds this is a critical investment for the economic and social recovery of Renfrew County and Eastern Ontario.
MacLeod says for every $1 invested she expects to see a $21 return on investment as hotels will be full, restaurants will be packed with tourist operators and retail stores also benefiting.
The Winter Games have been held since 1970 and usually take place every two years. It’s the largest multi-sport event in Ontario and features over 3,500 athletes, coaches, managers and officials. Over 25 different sporting events will take place with athletes between 11 to 22 years old.
