The Town of Petawawa is adding a $505 fine for harassing municipal staff and contractors who are enforcing parking restrictions.
The changes come after municipal by-law officers have been on the receiving end of increased belligerence, disrespect and hostility from members of the public while performing parking enforcement.
The new wording for the parking by-law amendment reads “no person shall willfully or maliciously hinder or interrupt or cause to be hindered or interrupted any employee or agent of the Town in the exercise of their powers or duties”.
The town already has a similar policy in place for parks and recreation areas around Petawawa.
Resisting or obstructing a public or peace officer can also result in criminal charges.
Staff are recommending a set fine in the amount of $405.00, plus a $95.00 victim surcharge fee, with a $5.00 court administration fee, for total payable of $505.00.
A by-law will be brought forward to the next council meeting to formalize the changes.
