The County of Renfrew is moving forward with hosting the 2022 Ontario Winter Games early next year (2022).
The event is expected to draw thousands of athletes, families and coaches to the Ottawa Valley.
The 2022 Ontario Winter Games are scheduled for the last weekend in February (25th – 27th) and the first weekend in March (3rd – 6th).
County council voted in favour of moving forward with hosting the games at their most recent meeting.
The 2022 Ontario Winter Games will feature over 20 different events and has venues spread out all across the Ottawa Valley (including locations in Deep River, Barry’s Bay, Pembroke, Petawawa, Cobden, Renfrew, Calabogie, Arnprior and Ottawa).
There are many concerns regarding hosting the upcoming 2022 Ontario Winter Games, but the County of Renfrew is going ahead with planning.
Chair of the Winter Games Committee Peter Emon says some concerns surround transportation, medical food and venues.
Emon told members of Renfrew County Council they will be using every hotel room in the community and are also bringing in 100 cots from Orillia who previously hosted the winter games.
Emon put forward a motion at the County Council on Wednesday, October 28th, to reassure the community and province of their intentions to host the 2022 Ontario Winter Games.
The motion passed with the majority of county representatives in favour.
The recorded vote shows county councillors from Horton, Greater Madawaska, Arnprior, Bonnechere Valley, Killaloe-Hagarty-Richards and Warden Debbie Robinson from Laurentian Valley all voted against the motion to support hosting the upcoming winter games.
Despite voting against the motion, Warden Robinson told members of county council they plan to put on a fantastic games.
