The Town of Petawawa plans to have a zero emissions fleet of half ton pickup trucks by the year 2035.
The plan is to integrate the vehicles as per the regular vehicle replacement schedule.
Manager of Public Works Chris Mantha says the only capital upgrade required would be adding in charging receptacles to the garage.
Mantha says the first truck is due for replacement in 2027.
Public Works uses four pickup trucks that are due for replacement in 2027, 2029 and 2032.
The Community Services Department uses two pickup trucks with replacement scheduled in 2029 and 2032.
Mantha says by having an electric pickup truck fleet they would save about $37,000 a year in gas with additional savings for not having to do oil changes, no maintenance for the exhaust system, brakes last longer with regenerative braking on electric vehicles and manufactures are also offering an 8-year battery warranty.
Mantha presented the report to council last night (October 25th) who supported the idea of implementing an electric fleet of half ton trucks.
The Public Works Director for the Town of Petawawa believes other municipalities will also make the change.
Mantha says by adding electric trucks to the fleet, Petawawa will demonstrate a commitment to protecting the environment.
