Empty land on Liam Street in Petawawa, Ontario, where the town is planning to build a new park.
The Town of Petawawa is planning to build a new park in the Laurentian Highlands subdivision. As part of the design process, the public had an opportunity to provide feedback earlier this summer (June of 2021). The Town of Petawawa received 145 responses with 71 percent coming from subdivision residents. Mayor Bob Sweet says it was heartwarming to see the response from community members.
Sweet says residents had some great ideas and it was nice to see the response from those who will use the park the most.
Council has agreed to move forward with the project and town staff will include the park in the draft budget for consideration. The estimated cost for the project would be around $360,000 plus HST. The Petawawa Mayor says the project would be funded through development charges with no impact to local taxpayers.
The Laurentian Highlands Park would be built off of Liam Street in Petawawa. The plans for the park include lots of natural features and amenities, benches, bike racks, play areas, new trees, picnic tables, a shade structure and shrubs would be planted along the neighbouring property line. The park would be built around one of the three planned subdivision dry ponds. The dry ponds would for the most part be open green space and could serve a recreational purpose when not required for stormwater management.
Work on the new park in the Laurentian Highlands subdivision is expected to begin sometime in 2022. The final design for the park will incorporate features from both concepts presented to council.
