This morning marks an important occasion for the United Way East Ontario, as the agency honours our four Regional Medical Officers of Health in a field apart from yet related to, their daily duties.
The individuals are joint winners of the United Way’s Community Builder of the Year Award (CBYA).
The four Medical Officers of Health and their units are: Dr. Robert Cushman, (Acting) RCDHU, Dr. Paula Stewart Leeds, Grenville, and Lanark District Health Unit, Dr. Vera Etches, Ottawa Public Health and Dr. Paul Roumeliotis, Eastern Ontario Health Unit.
The quartet are being recognized for their continued efforts to bring equity and social justice into health care practices-especially during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Michael Allen, President and Chief Executive Officer, United Way East Ontario says their names are household words for their pandemic pronouncements, but we may not know their true measure in advancing issues of equity.
Allen says the medical officers of health haven’t hidden where the facts have taken them.
Today’s ZOOM event begins at 11AM and will include recognition for twenty-two others deserving of a unique accolade.
The gathering will include greeting from Dr. Theresa Tam, Chief Public Health Officer of Canada.
