Pembroke Mayor Mike Lemay is cheering on local athletes competing at the Tokyo Olympics.
Pembroke’s Madeleine Kelly is representing the city on the biggest stage in sports.
Lemay says this must be an exciting moment for her family, friends and local coaches who helped her early in her career at Fellowes High School or Les Coureurs de Bois.
He adds the Ottawa Valley will be particularly well-represented in the 800-meter race as both Madeleine and Eganville’s Melissa Bishop-Nriagu are competing.
The Pembroke Mayor says he is excited to watch them both showcase the phenomenal athletic talent of our region as they race for all of Canada.
Kelly is competing in her first Olympic games and will run in heat number one which is expected to start around 9:25pm (eastern time) tonight (July 29th, 2021). Kelly won bronze at the Canadian Olympic Trials to earn her spot in Tokyo.
For Bishop-Nriagu, it’s her third Olympics and she will try to improve on her 4th place finish at the Rio games. The runner from Eganville will be in the third heat, expected to start at 9:41pm (eastern time).
