It’s a project that would save the province over $20-million. The County of Renfrew is looking to stone dust the Algonquin Trail from Petawawa all the way to Mattawa to keep cyclists off Highway 17. Petawawa Mayor Bob Sweet says the province is considering widening the highway and adding rumble strips for safety. He adds that stone dusting would be a fraction of the cost of rumble strips.
Sweet says they caught the attention of officials at the Association of Municipalities of Ontario conference this summer. He says he will continue to put pressure on the Ministry of Transportation to approve this project. If completed, residents would be able to travel from Smiths Falls to Mattawa on a fully stone dusted trail.
