The new Deep River Council is ready to hit the ground running. The inaugural council meeting took place last night (December 5th) and there’s quite a few new faces; Mayor Suzanne D’Eon and councillors Will Fitton, Christina Rochon and Kathy Hughes are new to the table. Returning members include Reeve Glenn Doncaster along with councillors Terry Myers and Robert McLaren. The first motion passed by the new mayor of Deep River was to accept her inaugural speech. D’Eon says she will have to rely on town staff and the experience of returning councillors as she gets used to the new role.
D’Eon doesn’t plan on wasting any time. Next week a group will make a presentation on bringing high speed internet (at least 10mbs) to Deep River. She says other top priorities include growing the town, rejuvenating housing options, improving the highway appeal and doing work on roads and other infrastructure. Deep River had the highest voter turnout in the province with over 65% of eligible voters hitting the polls on election night.
