Latest scam uses threats of lawsuit and arrest to lure victims

The Upper Ottawa Valley Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) are warning residents of a phone scam that is going around. People are being called by a fraudster who leaves a message to indicate the would-be victim is the subject of a lawsuit. The scammer attempts to create a sense of urgency by saying an arrest warrant will be issued for the victim if they don’t return the call immediately. These calls usually happen in the late evening or early morning, hoping to catch you off-guard. Police say if you get a message like this, don’t return the call, and never give out any personal information over the phone. If this scam happens to you, you can call the OPP or visit the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre website at www.antifraudcentre.ca
