The Upper Ottawa Valley Ontario Provincial Police say the investigation began on Thursday, October 29, after a financial institution in Petawawa reported suspected fraudulent activity involving an individual at its business.
Police were provided with descriptions of the suspect and their last known direction of travel.
A short time later, officers located a vehicle in Pembroke and took two individuals into custody in connection with the investigation.
Police say cash and several items consistent with identity and banking fraud offences were seized. The investigation was conducted with assistance from the OPP’s East Region Community Street Crime Unit.
As a result, 30-year-old Christopher Polgari of North York and 31-year-old Gergo Buri of East York have each been charged with fraud under $5,000, using or dealing with a forged document, personation with intent to commit identity fraud, possession of an identity document and possession of property obtained by crime under $5,000.
Both men are also facing five counts each of identity theft involving obtaining or possessing another person’s identity information.
The accused were held for bail hearings and subsequently released. They are scheduled to appear in the Ontario Court of Justice in Pembroke on November 24, 2026.
