Local officials are reminding hunters that safety starts long before they enter the field as deer season continues across the Ottawa Valley.
The County of Renfrew is encouraging hunting parties to review and share the following guidelines before heading into the bush:
- Always treat every firearm as loaded. Keep the muzzle pointed in a safe direction, identify your target and what lies beyond it, and keep your finger off the trigger until you are ready to shoot.
- Wear high-visibility clothing, check the weather, use a properly secured harness in a tree stand, and tell someone where you are going and when you expect to return.
- Stay sober, respect wildlife and the environment, and carry essentials such as a first aid kit, flashlight, whistle, and extra food and water.
Residents and non-residents can hunt white-tailed deer in Renfrew County with rifles, shotguns and muzzle-loaders until November 15. Additional muzzle-loader and bow-only seasons may apply, depending on the wildlife management unit where hunters plan to hunt. Ontario’s wildlife management unit map can help hunters determine which rules apply to their location.
Hunters can access Renfrew County Forest properties, except in areas where active forest operations are underway. They must be properly licensed and follow all applicable regulations, including rules governing seasons, bag limits and safety. Only temporary or portable tree stands are permitted.
