The Upper Ottawa Valley Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police says a driver has been charged following a two-vehicle collision on Highway 60 in North Algona-Wilberforce Township.
Police say the crash occurred June 10, 2026, shortly after 6 p.m., prompting a closure of a section of the highway for several hours while officers investigated and crews cleared the scene.
According to a preliminary investigation, an eastbound vehicle slowed or came to a stop on the roadway after a turtle was observed crossing. A second vehicle travelling behind was unable to stop in time and collided with the rear of the first vehicle.
OPP say the impact resulted in the temporary shutdown of the highway to allow for collision reconstruction and cleanup operations.
As a result of the investigation, a driver from Ottawa has been charged under the Highway Traffic Act.
Police are reminding motorists that stopping in a live lane of traffic can create serious risks for all road users. Drivers are advised to continue to a safe location off the roadway if wildlife is encountered and to contact police if assistance is required.
