(L to R) Annabella Wall and Briar Semenuk
While we as a country cheer on our athletes over in Italy, there is another Olympics right here in our own backyard. The Petawawa Skating Club is gearing up for its annual show, which this year is called “Olympic Dreams On Ice,” and it promises to be just as exciting as anything Milan and Cortina can offer. The show takes place on Saturday, March 7, from 2 to 4 p.m. at the Petawawa Civic Centre.
Fifteen-year-old Annabelle Wall remembers last year’s theme, which featured a bit of time travel on ice:
In the spirit of the ongoing Olympics, the event will feature flags and podiums and, most likely, gold, silver and bronze medals as the coveted prizes — and plenty more, says Annabelle:
Special guest Canadian skater David Shteyngart will be on hand to wow the crowd with his triples and 3+3 combos. Shteyngart is a national skater from the Eganville Skating Club, so he will be a more than welcome addition to this exciting show.
Grade 4 student Briar Semenuk and her dad, Mike, sat down with me this time last year to talk about the show, and she is back, a head taller and ready to go. Briar already knows her role quite well, having prepared all year for this event:
Briar has been on skates since she was two and a half, she says, and has her most joyful moments when on the ice. Roughly 70 skaters will take to the ice that day, and it promises to be one of the highlights of the year for everyone involved.
