Crypto fraudsters have collected over 50k from one unfortunate Renfrew resident, prompting OPP to issue a warning about people pretending to be who they are not.
In these spoofs, consumers and businesses are contacted via phone, email and/or text message by scammers.
Maybe your Social Insurance Number has been “compromised,” or someone has sent you a package full of contraband- or perhaps used your credit card to buy an outrageous amount of stuff.
Don’t forget the bank inspector, trying to have you help catch a dishonest employee, by withdrawing money from you account and transferring it to a “safe” account, i.e. theirs.
Scammers may even get you to allow them access to your computer to rectify an online issue, then rob your blind right before your eyes.
With these fake phone calls, nothing appears to be as it seems; your call display may even replicate the bank’s official phone number- so pay close attention to what they are telling you, and remember no agency will call you and say your SIN is compromised- it’s not a credit card.
Don’t even get to the stage of pressing “1” to speak to an agent; press disconnect and be done with it.
